A large share of retail prices end in a nine, and the pattern holds across countries, currencies and categories. The reason is a combination of how digits are read and what the digit has come to mean.

The left digit does most of the work

People process numbers from the left, and the first digit is encoded before the rest of the figure has been read. A drop that changes that leading digit registers as a bigger fall than the arithmetic supports.

Moving a price down by a single unit can therefore change the perceived category of the item, because the shopper has already filed it under a lower opening number before finishing the sequence.

The effect weakens when the leading digit stays the same. That is why retailers concentrate their nine-endings at the points where a rounding step would otherwise carry the price upward.

The ending became a signal in its own right

Decades of use have turned the nine into shorthand. Shoppers learn, without being told, that a nine-ending is the language retailers use for a value line rather than a premium one.

The signal is now strong enough to work in reverse. A round figure reads as considered and deliberate, which is why higher-end goods and services often price at whole numbers instead.

Because it is a learned association rather than a calculation, the signal survives even when a shopper knows exactly what is happening. Recognising a convention does not stop it framing the number.

Endings encode internal information

Within a single retailer, the final digits are frequently a code. One ending may mark a full-price line, another a temporary promotion, another stock that will not be replaced once it sells through.

Staff and systems use these conventions to route decisions. A price ending in a particular digit tells a shop floor worker whether an item can be marked down again or should be held at its current level.

The conventions differ between chains and are rarely published, so the same ending carries no consistent meaning across the market. It is reliable only inside the retailer that set it.

Why the practice survives round-number pricing pressure

Digital price displays and frequent repricing made round numbers technically easy, yet the nine-ending persisted. The convention had already become part of how a price is judged.

A retailer moving alone to round numbers looks more expensive on a comparison page even when it is not, because the eye reads the leading digit and the ending together.

The result is a stable equilibrium. Nobody gains from abandoning the convention while their competitors keep it, so the ending outlives the specific arithmetic that first justified it.

Where the pattern breaks down

Categories priced by weight, volume or duration cannot use ending digits cleanly, because the final figure is produced by a calculation rather than chosen by a merchant.

Auctions, negotiated sales and marketplaces with many independent sellers also disperse the pattern. When thousands of sellers set prices independently, the endings scatter across the full range of digits.

Those exceptions are useful diagnostics. Where nine-endings dominate, prices are being set deliberately; where they do not, the number is usually the output of a formula.
